Residents will begin to see the change of activity around the Mungindi Main Street (St George Street) from 17 - 29 April 2019, as Council installs new signs in preparation to launch the 40 kilometres per hour (km/h) High Pedestrian Activity Area.
Moree Plains Shire Council’s Project & Development Manager Ms Lila Fisher explained speed limits will be lowered from 50km/h to 40 km/h on St George Street, between Narrabri and Wirrah Streets, Mungindi.
“The new signs and pavement markings indicating the new 40km/h zone will be installed to make Mungindi a more pedestrian friendly area, improving safety for children, seniors and cyclists,” said Ms Fisher.
The cost for Mungindi High Pedestrian Activity Area has been fully funded & supported by the Roads and Maritime services(RMS) to assist with managing speed and pedestrian safety which has been an ongoing concern raised by the local residents. Research shows that a pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 40km/h has twice the chance of surviving the collision than if the car was travelling 50km/h.
Works for the implementation of the Mungindi High Pedestrian Activity Area are expected to be completed by 29 April 2019 when the new 40km/h signage will be unveiled.
A Variable Message Sign will be placed on the major approaches to the Mungindi CBD to notify motorists of the changed road conditions.
The new 40km/h zone encompasses area bordered by St George Street, 370m from Narrabri Street towards Wirrah Street.
