Brushmen's works not forgotten

The recent passing of renowned local artist Jack Absalom has sparked a renewed interest in his artworks, and those painted by his fellow Brushmen of the Bush.

In honour of Mr Absalom's career, staff at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery have re-hung its permanent collection to feature a large number of the Brushmen's works, including four pieces by Mr Absalom.

Council's Gallery and Museum Manager, Tara Callaghan, predicted the selection of painting would prove popular with locals and visitors alike.

"Jack Absalom was such a huge figure in the art scene, and I think his passing has made people really reflect on his work and his contribution to art," she said.

"We've had people asking every day to see more works by Jack and the other Brushmen, so hopefully this selection of paintings can serve as a showcase of their talents."

The last living Brushman of the Bush is John Pickup, who now resides in Queensland but maintains a keen interest in Broken Hill and its art. The other Brushmen include the late Kevin "Pro" Hart, Hugh Schulz, Jack Absalom, and Eric Minchin.

Locals and visitors wishing to visit the gallery are advised that it will be open every day from 10am-4pm across the long weekend.
