New kerbside bins on the way for Romsey and Riddells Creek

Residents in Romsey, Riddells Creek and surrounds will be the first in the shire to receive new black-bodied kerbside bins when the rollout begins in May.

The rollout of new bins is part of Council’s plan to replace all household waste and recycling bins throughout the shire over the next five years.

Residents in these areas advised to put out their current green-bodied bins for collection as usual and leave them out so they can be replaced by the new bins. The rollout will begin on Thursday 2 May and Friday 3 May and will be complete by the end of the month.

Once they receive new bins, residents are asked to start using them straight away and discontinue using the old bins, which should be left on the kerbside for pickup and disposal.

Chief Executive Officer Margot Stork said Council’s existing fleet of waste and recycling bins was steadily declining in condition, and were costly to replace.

“Council spends thousands of dollars each year repairing our old bins, as they are reaching the end of their life cycle and are increasingly fragile,” Ms Stork said.

“These new bins are made from recycled materials, and have higher levels of resistance against ultra-violet light (UV) and frost, which will increase their durability and lifespan.”

The new bins will be the same size as the current bins - 140 litre waste bins (red lid and black body) and 240 litre recycling bins (yellow lid and black body).

In keeping with Council’s commitment to recycling and environmental sustainability, the old bins will be reused and recycled. Once collected, old bins that are not significantly damaged will be used by Council as public place and event bins. Bins that are damaged and nearing the end of their life will be recycled to produce new bins

Letters have been sent to all households in the affected areas advising them of the bin replacement program.
