Take a stroll into the village

The extension of the Metung Boardwalk has been completed and Easter school holiday visitors and locals alike are making great use of the new boardwalk to take in the beautiful scenery of Metung.

The East Gippsland Shire Council project to extend the boardwalk by 325 metres from Riviera Nautic to the corner of Rosherville Road was completed ahead of the current school holidays.

Council used local contractor Jarvis Norwood for the project and 155 metres of the new boardwalk was open ahead of the Christmas holiday season. The final 170 metres of the boardwalk was completed in the first part of this year. Early stages of the work included the replacement of an old timber retaining wall with steel piles and concrete panels.

Council’s Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said the majority of post-Christmas construction involved installation of decking and kerb rails.

“Our contractor was able to work from the water side to limit traffic and pedestrian disruptions, while boating activity was not impacted either. Private jetty access was maintained during the project,” Ms Weigall said.

“The project was identified as a high priority in the Metung Nungurner Community Plan as it provides a safe pedestrian connection from the end of the current boardwalk to Chinaman’s Creek. It is a great asset for the community and encourages walking, fishing, recreational activities and tourism,” Ms Weigall said.

The $1.079 million project was funded through a combination of council and Regional Roads Victoria funding and a grant from the Tourism Demand Drivers Program.
