Swim between the flags this Easter

With thousands of holiday makers and locals expected to make the most of the beaches in the Byron Shire this Easter break and school holidays, people are asked to make sure they swim at patrolled beaches and between the flags. 

Volunteer surf lifesavers will patrol Main Beach at Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads over Easter and Anzac Day, while paid lifeguards will patrol other beaches in the Byron Shire.

“Looking after the safety of people in the water is an enormous job, and the main message for everyone is to swim between the flags,” Acting Mayor, Michael Lyon, said.

“As we are coming to the end of the summer I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who have given up their weekends and public holidays over the past six months to patrol our beaches – your service to the community is outstanding,” he said.

Council is reminding people that there is now a lifeguard service at Tyagarah Beach, north of Belongil.

“This is a long stretch of beach that can be quite dangerous so swimmers should swim between the flags so the lifeguards can keep an eye on them,” Acting Mayor Lyon said.
