Council has committed to lighting up the city with a $1.68m tender awarded to Sydney-based lighting specialists, Silver Bullet Projects.
The company's directors have over 40 years’ experience in entertainment lighting, and have worked on projects such as the Commonwealth Games, Sydney New Year's Eve celebration, and Sydney Arts Festival.
Silver Bullet will undertake significant work in Broken Hill as part of the Australia's Heritage Perfectly Highlighted project, including permanent 'Vivid-style' lighting and projection installations at the Town Hall Facade, Civic Centre, Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, Town Square, and Sturt Park.
Mayor Darriea Turley said the lighting would add a whole new dimension to the city's CBD.
"The Heritage Festival illumination and projection at the Town Hall Facade has already shown how effectively lighting can enliven a whole area, and it will be great to extend that approach to other areas in the city on a full-time basis," she said.
"Lighting up key areas of the city will not only make Broken Hill a more attractive tourism destination, but will also make the city more vibrant by night."
The project’s cost will be shared between Council and the State, after the NSW Government contributed $750,000 through the Restart NSW Growing Local Economies Fund in January 2019.
"Once we received that grant we went out to tender to see what types of lighting options were available, and Silver Bullet's $1.68m package really fit with our vision for lighting up Broken Hill," said Mayor Turley.
"It essentially leaves us matching the grant dollar-for-dollar which we're comfortable with, and we can't wait to get the project underway."
