Locals do Northern Beaches proud in NSW Lifeguard Surfing Cup

The Council lifeguards who represented the Northern Beaches held their own at last Friday’s Surfing Cup in Maroubra.

In tricky two to three foot waves in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, the men’s team won through to the semi-finals, with the women’s team quarter-finalists.

“The competition was of a really high standard. Our teams were competing against former ex-professional surfers from the WCT (World Championship Tour) as well as current WQS (World Qualifying Series) surfers.

“Our number one ranked surfer David Vlug, who also competes on the WQS, was able to bag one of the highest wave scores of the day.

“Special mention to our women’s team…they were the only girls team to compete, which meant they had to line against the men’s teams. They were praised and respected by all involved for how well they surfed and competed,’’ Clinton Rose, Council’s Manager of Beach Safety, said.

Central Coast Lifeguards snared the trophy ahead of Wollongong and Waverley Lifeguards.

The inaugural event will now be staged annually by Surfing NSW, part of fostering the ongoing positive relationship between the two organisations.

The primary aim is to have local surfers working closely with Council Lifeguards and Surf Life Saving volunteers to encourage surfers to play a bigger part than they already do in keeping our beaches safe.
