HomeNews Articles2019April 2019 Peel Street to undergo vegetation revitalisationPeel Street, the leafy heart of Tamworth and commonly referred to as the “Boulevard of Dreams” among country music fans and artists, is set to undergo an upgrade to its vegetation and irrigation with the aim of enhancing the aesthetics and sustainability of the street.
The series of minor works will commence on Monday 29 April and are estimated to take approximately two weeks to complete.
Manager of Sports and Recreation at Tamworth Regional Council, Mr. Paul Kelly said: “The garden beds and vegetation that line Peel Street are in excess of 20 years old. Our team have brought to light noticeable problems that we need to rectify.
The problems that Council have identified include damages to various hedges and plants, garden beds in need of nutrient-rich soil and damage to irrigation systems caused by existing roots that are resulting in unsustainable water usage.
“We are proud of our main street here in Tamworth and we want to ensure that it looks attractive and tidy and offers a nice space for our community and visitors to enjoy.
“We also want the vegetation to be the most suitable in order to withstand the harsh weather conditions and to maximise water sustainability and efficiency.” added Mr. Kelly.
Council will be planting more sustainable plants and upgrading to a more efficient, sub surface water system as part of the revitalisation project.
Works will be carried out in the following locations: • 3 Peel Street Pedestrian Crossings • Peel Street intersections at Bourke, Brisbane and Fitzroy and White Street Following the revitalisation of these initial areas, Council will explore other areas throughout the CBD that will require re-planting at a later date.
There will be limited disruption to motor and pedestrian traffic during the execution of these upgrades aside from some car-parking being used for equipment and the sectioning-off of the direct areas that are undergoing work.
