The community will soon be able to ride, walk or run along a new universally accessible section of shared pathway currently being constructed along the Leschenault Estuary Foreshore Reserve between Ridley Place and Christina Street Reserve.
In October 2018, following extensive community consultation where over 80 per cent of respondents supported the shared pathway proposal, Council approved the project design and in March 2019 it approved a tender for the project implementation.
Recently, Council also approved listing funds, for consideration in the 2019/20 Draft Budget, to undertake environmental and landscaping improvements in the area adjoining the new shared pathway and to improve annual maintenance of the foreshore reserve area.
Contributory funding for the project was received from the Department of Transport and, as part of the Eaton – Australind Historic Walk Trail, contributory funding to upgrade the existing path along Old Coast Road from Christina Street Reserve to the Collie River Bridge was also received from Royalties for Regions.
Once the current foreshore shared pathway works have been completed, work on the section of the pathway between the Christina Street Reserve and the Collie River bridge will commence.
The works also include the construction of a pedestrian refuge island on Old Coast Road opposite the Christina Reserve.
The overall project is in line with the recommendations of the Bunbury Wellington Cycle Plan 2050.
