With another patrol season concluding this Sunday 28 April, Northern Beaches Council is delighted to report the fantastic work by professional lifeguards as well as volunteer lifesavers on our beaches across the 2018/19 season.
No fatalities were recorded during rostered hours of lifeguards stretching from Palm Beach to Manly, a statistic which pleased Clinton Rose, Council’s Manager of Beach Safety.
He pointed out that Council’s lifeguards, with the assistance of volunteer lifesavers on weekends and public holidays, attended to a number of incidents requiring basic first aid or resuscitations, and also performed major rescues, such as cliff falls.
Manly Beach was its usual hive of activity, with over four million visitors across the 12 months. Just over 400 rescues were carried out, with 342 people receiving first aid following incidents in the water or on the sand.
Guests to neighbouring North Steyne (949,914) kept lifeguards on their toes, as did Dee Why Beach with over 900,000 visitors.
Queenscliff (678,713), Freshwater (632,521), North Curl Curl (455,340) and South Curl Curl (336,970) also enjoyed healthy numbers of beach enthusiasts.
