Temporary Outdoor Gallery Installed

A temporary public art commission, in celebration of Neighbour Day 2019, has been installed in the Mall today.  Solar light towers, recently installed in the Mall, will serve as temporary outdoor gallery space. 

Four local artists have been selected for this installation, responding to the 2019 Neighbour Day theme: 'Loneliness – What Neighbours Can Do to Create Connection' in their artwork. 

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said "The artwork installed in the Mall today raises awareness of the importance of community and connections." 

"I congratulate Relationships Australia on bringing the community's attention to this important matter and these special artworks will be kept to display in Council buildings following the exhibition." 

Relationships Australia facilitate Neighbour Day and have welcomed the art installation, “Neighbour Day aims to build better relationships with the people who live around us, especially the elderly and vulnerable, so that we can all live in communities that are welcoming, kind and supportive," said Tracey O'Driscoll.

"We are delighted that City of Darwin continues to support Neighbour Day and congratulate these talented local artists for exploring the themes of lonliness and connection in such a vivid and engaging way.”

Successful Artists Alicia Scobie: Alicia’s contemporary art practice contributes to the fields of print culture, humour in art and art through the perspective of motherhood. Her current interests lie in “the self”, the role of objects in art making and how art can make you laugh.

Gloria Richards: Gloria Richards is a designer and graphic artist enjoying the blurry area between design and art. One of her recent works is the 25 metre Memory Wall at the Parap Pool.

Rita Macarounas: Rita returned to Darwin four years ago after a long period living in Greece. Primarily a painter, she is particularly drawn to the colour red and all its hues. Gold is also an important component in her work and identifies her Greek Orthodox spiritual heritage. 

Jason Lee: Jason Lee is a Larrakia, Wardaman and Karajarri artist from Darwin. Jason is a multidisciplinary artist who is self-taught and has been producing art since 1983.  

The Neighbour Day Temporary Outdoor Gallery Commission is a creative approach to transforming solar lighting towers, as Council continues to work with stakeholders on a longer term solution.
