Residents driving through the Tara and Fitzpatrick Street intersection in Toowoomba will experience a safer passage thanks to work undertaken by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) through the national Black Spot Program.

Officially re-opened today (3 May), TRC Infrastructure Committee Chair, Councillor Carol Taylor said the $470,000 upgrade, included the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Tara and Fitzpatrick Street, replacing and upgrading the underground water mains, installation of underground power and additional modern LED street lighting.

“Improving the overall safety on roads throughout the region remains a key priority for Council,” Cr Taylor said.

“The upgrades to this intersection will significantly help improve traffic flow and provide a safer and more efficient movement of traffic, particularly for those in the western Toowoomba area.

“Council identified that the Tara/Fitzpatrick intersection required safety improvement and was successful in securing funding through the Australian Government Blackspot Program to undertake the works which we are very thankful for.

“We would also like to thank the community for their patience while the upgrade was completed.”

Over the past five years, six accidents were recorded at this intersection, prompting a need for safety improvements.

In total $370,000 was contributed through the Australian Government Blackspot Program and $100,000 was contributed by Toowoomba Regional Council.

The Australian Government provides funding through the Black Spot Program to reduce the incidents of crashes on local roads.
