Be safe on the road

Residents are urged to pledge to drive safely as part of National Road Safety Week, which begins today and finishes on Sunday, 12 May.

The Safer Australian Roads and Highways Group initiative will see a number of Victorian landmarks illuminated in yellow to highlight road safety, with emergency vehicles, fleet trucks, cars, motorcycles and bicycles to display yellow ribbons.

“Every year, more than 1200 people are killed and 35,000 seriously injured on Australian roads. This is a figure that we, as a community, need to reduce by working together,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth.

“Simple measures, such as removing all distractions, not using your mobile phone whilst driving, adhering to the speed limit and driving to the relevant conditions, can help lower the toll.

“Council has, and continues to, play a role in promoting road safety by upgrading and maintaining roads throughout the Gannawarra.”

Motorists are also encouraged to visit the National Road Safety Week website to pledge that they will drive so other road users will survive.
