For the past three years the City of Rockingham has contracted the PSO to provide the Romance on the Green concert at the Village Green in February. Part of the arrangement with the PSO sees the group visit a number of schools across the City to deliver musical programs to both primary and secondary students. Waikiki Primary School was one of the schools to benefit from the group’s visit, with students from kindergarten to Year 6 taking part in an immersive musical experience. Led by a conductor and PSO musicians, students of all skill levels got the chance to make music in a fun and informative environment that utilised brass, string and percussion instruments. The PSO also engages in “Share the Chair” sessions with small groups of secondary students. These sessions are for students already engaged in musical education and focus on skill building and introducing young people to professional musicians. Mayor Barry Sammels said the City of Rockingham was delighted to be able to help facilitate the Ensemble Masterclass program at Waikiki Primary School. "The Perth Symphony Orchestra is a supremely talented group that brings the joy of music to the City of Rockingham each year through the Romance on the Green concert and with visits to local schools," Mayor Sammels said. "The Ensemble Masterclass at Waikiki Primary School was a huge hit with students. For some it was their first experience with music like this and the enthusiasm on their faces was evident for all to see. "The program with the PSO contributes to building the capacity of young people seeking to engage with the arts and cultural activities. It also helps to widen experience and provide support for students who may have a future in the music industry."
