COUNCIL NEWS 8 MAY 2019

Friday 3 May 2019 was a significant day for health in the Weddin Shire with the Official Opening of the Grenfell Medical Centre by the Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Member for Riverina the Hon Michael McCormack MP who was accompanied by the Mayor Cr Mark Liebich and Grenfell Health Council representative Mr Peter Spedding.

Mr Chad White delivered the Acknowledgement to Country and Cr Liebich formally welcomed everyone and presented an overview of the project. Peter Spedding addressed the crowd and advised the new Medical Centre will be a great addition to the health facilities in the shire. In conducting the Official Opening Mr McCormack recognised what a tremendous facility we now have in the Weddin Shire which we should all be very proud of. Mr McCormack was also very pleased that the grant funding provided by the Federal Government is being used in such a positive and constructive manner.

The official opening was the culmination of the construction of a magnificent state of the art facility which will serve residents of the Weddin Shire and surroundings areas for many years into the future.

Thank you to everyone involved in the project who assisted in achieving this great result. It was a great team effort to bring this project to fruition.

    

With the Grenfell Medical Centre now completed another project underway is the upgrade of the Grenfell Sewerage Treatment Plant. As residents are aware Council has received grant funding of $8.81m under the Regional Water and Waste Water Backlog Program to upgrade the plant. 

This approval was part of the NSW Government’s $110million Regional Water and Waste Water Backlog Program to ensure regional communities have the right infrastructure to build for the future.  The Regional Water and Waste Water Backlog Program enables the construction of modern water and sewerage infrastructure and associated works to provide safe, secure and reliable water and sewerage services to communities.  In regards to the status of the project Council has completed the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors (REF) with the detailed design currently in progress.

This is another exciting capital project Council is currently undertaking which will also upgrade our assets to ensure we remain sustainable in the future and continue to provide quality services to our residents.

Council’s works program is continuing and the following works have been completed, are currently in progress or about to commence:   

Lignum Creek Bridge Upgrade works completed, Received Grant under REPAIR Programme to strengthen the pavement by heavy patching & sealing – MR 239 (Henry Lawson Way/Young Road) Shoulder widening and strengthening has commenced on Henry Lawson Way/Forbes Road Medical Centre Kerb & Gutter completed Medical Centre Footpath completed Medical Centre construction completed Emu Creek rehabilitation continuing Sewer relining completed Roadside slashing and spraying program continuing

These works are all part of Councils works programme and are vital to ensure our assets are upgraded and maintained for the benefit of our residents.

There is certainly a lot happening in the next few months which is excellent as these events are very important to the economic and social fabric of our Shire.

As reported last week the NSW Government has opened applications for the new funding program called ‘My Community Project’.  The amount of funding available is from $20,000 to $200,000. This program will enable individuals to put forward their ideas for a project in their area and a public vote will determine which projects have the most community support. Voting for the nominated projects will take place over a period of four weeks from the 15th July 2019 to the 15th August 2019. Examples of projects to be considered in this program are:

Playgrounds Public Gardens Upgrades to local sporting facilities Health Programs

Submissions can be lodged online at https://mcp.smartygrants.com.au/2019. Submissions close at 2.00pm on 15th May, 2019.

A reminder to residents the Stan McCabe ‘Good Sports Night’ will be held on Friday, 24 May 2019 at the Grenfell Showground.

The fundraiser is paying homage to local cricketer Stan McCabe and will feature guest speakers Doug Walters and John Benaud. Admission is $70 for families, $50 for singles, $25 for pensioners and $10 for solo teens. All funds raised will go to the Black Dog Institute, Drought Relief Fund and the Grenfell Showground Trust.

The new exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is "Landscape Shadows" by Cathie Coleman and is on display from 16 April to 30 May 2019. Cathie has lived, taught and made art at her Bittern studio on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria for many years. Her recent paintings encompass a play of light and dark within the landscape which creates an emotive response. Cathie's paintings emerge from her observation and interest in the breadth of the land around her, through a realist beginning to a landscape painting rich in feelings, secrets, shapes, patterns and colours. Cathie also designs one off jewellery pieces which will be featured in her exhibition - including sterling silver rings, neck pieces with silver, leather, silver chain of varying links and semi precious and collected beads.  The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Weddin Shire Council has been granted $1m grant funding under the Federal, Liberal and National Governments Drought Communities Program (DCP) and residents are invited to provide feedback to Council on where the funding could be spent.

Residents are requested to provide feedback or suggestions to Council by 4pm Wednesday 15 May, 2019 to Email or the address below.
