Liaisons – A Collaborative Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture

Long-time friends, southwest sculptor Mary Knott and painter Juliet Stone, have united with a mutual love of space to present the Liaison Exhibition at ArtGeo Gallery. 

Juliet uses encaustic, a wax based painting medium, and pigments to create translucent layers that acknowledge the vast Australian landscape. 

Juliet said her work is an acknowledgement of place, its vastness and sense of natural phenomena.

“My subjects are internal reflections. Layers of encaustic and pigments are carefully worked to produce the transparency I want and the slow growth of a painting is finally produced,” Juliet said.   

Mary said trees and boats are central to her object making, after more than a decade of living close to the bay, her works are imbued with a sense of calm serenity. 

“The small narrative sculptures depicting isolated boats stranded on a rock, are metaphors for feeling alone that is derived from working in isolation,” Mary said. 

“By chance I met a bronze caster in the early 1990s and he convinced me to commit ephemeral works made from cane, papier-mâché and twigs into editionable bronze castings. The sculptures in this exhibition illustrate both disciplines,” Mary said.

The public are invited to join Mary and Juliet at the exhibition opening event at ArtGeo on Saturday 11 May from 2pm to 3.30pm with guest speaker Caroline Lunel. Caroline is the City of Bunbury Collection Curator at the Bunbury Regional Arts Gallery.
