Toowoomba Regional Council is encouraging the community this Sunday 12th May to enjoy a coffee and celebrate the memories of Mums, who have passed, at the Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
Chair of the Environment and Community Committee Cr Geoff McDonald said the ‘Celebrating our Mums this Mother’s Day’ event allows people to observe a Mother’s Day remembrance while enjoying the beautiful gardens surrounding the cemetery.
“The event also provides an opportunity to visit the Drayton & Toowoomba cemetery and realise that this is a community asset for everyone to enjoy”, Cr McDonald said.
“After a successful Mother’s Day remembrance last year with more than 5000 visitors, we are inviting the community to again celebrate our Mums on Mother’s Day.
“Council want to change the perception of the cemetery from only a place of sadness to also be a place of commemoration and encourage visitors to enjoy the Pop-Up Flower Market and guided historical walks visiting some of our Famous Mothers from Toowoomba’s past.
“If you haven’t been out to the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery recently this would be a great opportunity to take a look at the changes to the gardens where many of our loved ones lay at rest.
“The Cemetery Office will be open to allow visitors to search the database and find members of their family tree.
“The Mother’s Day celebration is also an opportunity for the community to learn a little more about the historical figures who are buried at our region’s largest cemetery with a guided historical tour.
“There will also be a mini-paranormal walk for those interested in a more supernatural experience”, Cr McDonald said.
“Toowoomba Region’s Parks and Garden staff take pride in keeping our cemeteries as beautiful places of remembrance and we would like the community to enjoy the garden’s floral tributes to those who have passed.
“Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate important people in our lives but for those whose mothers have passed this may be a difficult time. Sunday’s event allows the community to honour their Mums and brighten up the cemetery by laying some flowers in a complimentary pink vase”, Cr McDonald said.
“Mothers play an important part in peoples’ lives and this is a wonderful occasion for people to remember those happy days in the stunning surroundings of the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery”.
The ‘Celebrating our Mums this Mother’s Day’ event will be held from 8.00am – 1.00pm on the 12th May. For more information please go to www.tr.qld.gov.au/events.
