Neighbours Encouraged to Unite
City of Rockingham 10 May 2019

Neighbour Day is an annual celebration held on the last Sunday of March each year and focusses on helping residents build lasting connections with neighbours on their street.

The City’s Neighbours Unite initiative is a local program that helps build on the values instilled by Neighbour Day. The aim of Neighbours Unite is to build a connected community where residents get to know and look out for each other.

As part of Neighbours Unite, those who register to become a member are eligible to receive a rebate to host a Neighbours Unite Activity. Neighbours Unite activities can include a barbecue, dog walk in a local park, high tea, picnic in the park or a national dish dinner. Residents are encouraged to be as creative as possible to enable them to get to know each other.

City of Rockingham Deputy Mayor Deb Hamblin encouraged residents to register and become part of Neighbours Unite.

"Neighbours Unite is a wonderful community initiative that brings residents of all ages and backgrounds together," Deputy Mayor Hamblin said.

"At the City, we understand the benefits of connecting with your neighbours so we encourage residents to make every day Neighbour Day by joining Neighbours Unite.

"The City will provide residents with a rebate to host a Neighbours Unite activity and will also provide community safety information and other resources including invitations and a t-shirt for the host, to support an activity."

Local resident Thelma Murphy recently hosted her own Neighbours Unite Activity in Warnbro and described it as a rewarding experience.

"It’s a great idea and for the effort to put it together, the satisfaction of the friendly atmosphere was so rewarding," she said.

"This has been such a benefit to our little community and I can see already that friendships have been started."

Neighbours Unite Activities aren’t limited to Neighbour Day and residents are encouraged to make every day a Neighbour Day.
