Safety Heroes Recognised

The Safety Heroes concept was developed as a result of the consultation that informed the development of the City’s Community Safety Strategy 2015 – 2020. A strong emphasis was placed on the need to provide emergency and safety education to the wider community, with the Safety Heroes program piloted in 2016 as a result.

Students from Bungaree, Baldivis, Cooloongup, Golden Bay, Port Kennedy primary schools and Malibu School, participated in a two-term program focused on emergency services, water, internet, home and community safety. Becoming a Safety Hero is an important achievement for the students as it teaches them to be aware of the actions needed to keep themselves, their family and community safe.  

Mayor Barry Sammels congratulated the students on completing the Safety Heroes program.

"Safety Heroes is a fun and interactive City program that is taught to the students in their classrooms and it was a delight for Councillors to visit local schools and present the students with their Safety Heroes cape and certificate at the end of the program," Mayor Sammels said.

To help engage parents with the program, students are sent home with Safety Heroes Passports that are to be completed together.

"I congratulate all of the schools, students and parents who helped make the program a success this year and look forward to more schools getting involved in 2019."   

Councillors were joined at school assembly presentations by local police officers and the Constable Care mascot.  

Upon completion of the program an independent evaluator assesses the content to ensure it delivers against learning outcomes. For 2018, Malibu School adapted the program to its own needs. All classroom resources for the Safety Heroes program are provided by the City.
