Teddy Bears' Picnic
City of Rockingham 10 May 2019

As part of the Summer Series and Children’s Week (Friday 19 October to Sunday 28 October 2018), the City has partnered with the Rockingham Early Years Group to host the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The picnic is a yearly event held by the City that offers families a chance to engage with local early years’ service providers and take part in fun activities including face painting, a bouncy castle and an animal farm.

Children’s Week is a national celebration of children’s rights, talents and citizenship and acts as a reminder of our responsibility to advocate for the right to a positive childhood. The Teddy Bears’ Picnic is not only part of Children’s Week, but is also celebrated on Universal Children’s Day, which always falls on the fourth Wednesday of October.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged residents to grab a picnic blanket and basket, and come to Fantasy Park to join in all the fun.

"The annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic gives families an opportunity to meet with local early years’ service providers as well as the chance to join in a range of fun and engaging activities," Mayor Sammels said.

"Families will have the chance to enjoy face painting, a cuddly animal farm, a bouncy castle and more at the Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

"This year’s event is not to be missed, with the Paint Rockingham REaD egg set to hatch at the picnic."

Paint Rockingham REaD is part of the Paint the Town REaD national grassroots literacy campaign, which encourages the community to read, talk, sing and rhyme with children from birth so they are ready to read and write by the time they start at school.

As part of the campaign, children across the City have read to an egg throughout 2018 and helped it grow by adding their own ‘splotch’. Children have also taken turns at guessing what is inside the egg and all will be revealed at the Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The picnic will take place at Fantasy Park on Wednesday 24 October from 9am–11.30am.
