Anti-Poverty Week 2018

In an exciting first the City has also expanded its Anti-Poverty Week program to deliver a second ‘mini-expo’ at the Mary Davies Library and Community Centre in Baldivis on Wednesday 17 October from 9.30am–11.30am.  

Anti-Poverty Week runs from 14–20 October and encourages all Australians to organise or take part in activities that help to raise awareness and assist people to gain skills to overcome issues contributing to poverty and hardship. The week is capped off by the United Nation’s annual international Anti-Poverty Day on 17 October. 

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the Anti-Poverty Week Expo would provide residents who may be struggling financially with a number of vital resources.

"Severe hardship and poverty are important issues that affect people in our City and more than one million others across Australia," Mayor Sammels said.

"The City is proud to once again partner with the Salvation Army to host the Anti-Poverty Week Expo. The event is focused on helping the most vulnerable residents in our community and will provide a range of skills, tips and advice on how to reduce the cost of bills as well as free budgeting advice."

The City’s Anti-Poverty Week Expo in Cooloongup will showcase local service providers that offer free support, advice and information including South Coastal Health and Community Support, Access Housing, Kwinana Early Years Services, the Salvation Army and the City of Rockingham.

One-on-one appointments with Centrelink, Department of Housing, SCALES, and Anglicare WA’s Financial Counsellor will also be available during the expo.

A one-hour budgeting workshop by Chaston Financial Solutions will be delivered from 10.30am–11.30am at the expo, while a one-hour workshop from Brain Ambulance titled How to Stay Sane in Financially Tough Times will be held from 12.30pm–2pm.

Freo St Doctor and Orange Sky Laundry will provide medical and laundry services while SGB Podiatry will provide a foot and ankle clinic.  

The ‘mini expo’ in Baldivis will offer free information, advice, handouts, brochures and flyers that can be taken home.

A Baldivis Salvation Army support worker will be on site providing information and support from 9.30am–11.30am while Anglicare Financial Counselling will be available for one-on-one appointments for the entire expo.

Chaston Financial Solutions will also host a budgeting workshop from 10am–11am.
