Seaside Scavenge Comes to Rockingham

The Seaside Scavenge is an event that sees participants go ‘scavenging’ for litter in waterways and parklands.

For every 10 pieces of litter that people collect they earn a trash token, which can be used as currency in a pop-up market that contains second hand reusable goods such as clothes, books and homewares.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the City of Rockingham was delighted to be hosting the first ever Seaside Scavenge in WA.

“The City of Rockingham has 37 kilometres of beautiful coastline that both residents and visitors enjoy year round,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Unfortunately though, our beaches are not immune to the damage that litter can cause to our precious marine environment.

“To help protect our coastline we encourage residents to bring as many family and friends as possible to the Seaside Scavenge during its first visit to the west coast.”

During the Seaside Scavenge there will also be live music and guest speakers providing tips on how to avoid using single use plastics.

“Whilst down at the Seaside Scavenge, the City encourages visitors to support local businesses in the area displaying the Seaside Scavenge poster,” Mayor Sammels said. 

“They have pledged to reduce a single-use item like straws, coffee cups or plastic packaging so be sure to pop in and thank them for their efforts in helping to make the City a more sustainable place.”

Residents who wish to donate quality clothing, books and accessories to the pop-up market can drop their goods off at the Rockingham Visitor Centre, located at the Gary Holland Community Centre on Kent Street.

Alternatively, they can be dropped off at the Naragebup Environmental Centre on Safety Bay Road.

The Seaside Scavenge will take place on Saturday 20 October from 10am – 2pm at Bell Park on the Rockingham Foreshore.
