City Celebrates NAIDOC Week
City of Rockingham 10 May 2019

Ahead of official NAIDOC Week 2018 celebrations running from 8–15 July, the City’s special event celebrated the different aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.   Mayor Barry Sammels said the City was set to host a number of free community events this NAIDOC Week, with all community members invited to get involved.   “NAIDOC Week is a chance for all of us to come together as a community to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Mayor Sammels said.   “The theme for 2018 is Because of Her, We Can and this year we pay particular attention to the vital role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played, and continue to play, in families, communities and organisations.   “Over the coming weeks there will be something for everyone to get involved in, from art workshops to film screenings and a cultural journey with inspiring Wongathu/Yamatji woman Gningala Yarran-Mark.”   NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July.   For more information on events happening throughout the City this NAIDOC Week view the event flyer, see our What's On calendar or contact 9528 0333.
