Beach laws accommodate dogs and horses

With the Broome Race Round kicking off on 1 June, laws requiring dogs to be kept on leashes at Cable Beach in the morning are now in effect.

The section of Cable Beach near Gantheaume Point and extending for 2km north of the beach access ramp is designated as a dog exercise area, but between 1 May and 31 August each year, from 5.30am to 10am on weekdays, dogs are required to be kept on a leash.

The local law was introduced in 2014 following incidents between unrestrained dogs and race horses in the area, and is enforced by Shire of Broome Rangers with a fine of $200 for those not controlling their dogs in exercise areas.

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, says the laws strike a balance between providing adequate areas for dogs and their owners, while at the same time protecting horses and their handlers.
