Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event that encourages students to walk and commute safely to school. It seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. In a bid to encourage as many schools as possible to take part in the event, the City is supporting a number of primary and secondary schools to host a healthy breakfast as part of their events. City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said 31 schools had registered to receive their donation for a healthy breakfast. "The National Walk Safely to School Day event is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about the benefits of maintaining a physically active lifestyle, having a healthy diet, looking after the environment and road safety," Mayor Sammels said.
"The event promotes active travel which has a wide range of benefits including reduced traffic congestion, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved social wellbeing and a greater sense of community. "I encourage as many students as possible to replace vehicle travel with walking on Friday 17 May."
