Voting Thoughts (Mayor’s Column 11 May 2019)

Quite a few of you will be choosing to pre-poll at the moment. Please have the Bypass with tunnels at the forefront of your mind and give some thought as to who is best to deliver the community’s wishes and needs.

With Research Comes Life

I’d like to invite you all to come together for a Biggest Morning Tea at Coffs Harbour City Council on Thursday, May 23, to raise awareness and be part of the fight against cancer.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of the Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia.

Each year more than 11,000 Australians gather their friends, family or workmates, share a cuppa and tasty treats, and give support to those affected by cancer by raising funds for cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support services.

Probably everyone in the Coffs community has been affected by cancer. I certainly have. It may be you yourself, it may be a relative or it may be a friend. I doubt if any of us has been untouched by this terrible disease.

But every year research uncovers new drugs, new approaches and new treatments and it’s vitally important that life-saving research is supported until cancer becomes consigned to the history books.

Most importantly – and speaking as a survivor myself – we need to remember that with research comes life.

So please come along on the 23rd and support this vital cause. Everyone is welcome.

Council’s Biggest Morning Tea will be held in the Foyer of the Customer Service Centre on the corner of Coff and Castle Streets from 10am.

Fantastic Fellas

Congratulations to the Coffs Harbour Men’s Shed for creating such a vibrant and useful community facility down there at the end of Howard Street.

It’s got everything you could possibly need to build wonderful furniture and toys to help raise funds for the community, or just pop in for a chat.

Wonderful Volunteers

I must also mention the volunteers of the Woolgoolga Neighbourhood Centre who kindly invited me to their Open Day this week. They’re an amazing bunch who do all kinds of jobs – from the gardening to being on the Centre’s Board!

I love meeting people who put others before themselves and it’s always humbling to come across the many unsung heroes behind the large number of community organisations that we’re all guilty of taking for granted. Thank you all!
