(14/5/2019) Join us at the Samson Community Planting Day
City of Fremantle 14 May 2019

The first of this year’s City of Fremantle community planting days is on this Saturday at Sir Frederick Samson Park.

Over the next few months the City will be hosting seven community planting days in bush, river and coastal areas throughout Fremantle.

The City’s Landscaping and Natural Areas Team Leader, Katrina Sachse, said around 12,500 native plants will be planted through the City’s revegetation program this year.

“Community planting days are a fun and interesting way to get out and meet new people in your area, so if you’d like to get more involved in learning about and conserving  native flora and fauna we’d love for you to join us,” Ms Sachse said.

“This weekend we’ll commence planting the 3000 native plants we have planned for Samson Park with the help of the new Friends of Samson Park and the South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL). Conservation Volunteers Australia will work with the City to complete the planting program in the coming weeks.

“All you need to bring is closed-in shoes, a hat and a water bottle, and we’ll provide gardening gloves, trowels and a barbecue lunch.

“All ages are welcome and there’s no need to register in advance. Just turn up and sign the volunteer register on Saturday.”

Community Planting Days in the City are supported by SERCUL, the State NRM Office and the Sidney Myer Foundation, along with various ‘Friends of’ groups, Perth NRM and Conservation Volunteers Australia.

In addition to the community planting days the City also hosts special planting days with students from Fremantle Primary School and John Curtin College, volunteers from WA resources company Woodside and its own staff planting day, supported by Perth NRM and Conservation Volunteers Australia.

The Samson Park community planting gets underway at 8:45am and will finish around 12:30pm.

In the coming months other community planting days will be held at Leighton Beach, Clontarf Hill, Booyeembara Park, Hollis Park, Prawn Bay and Cantonment Hill (details below).
