Cooper Street and Charlton Street ‘under construction’

The Cessnock CBD will be a hive of activity as upgrade works commence on Cooper and Charlton Street at the end of the month. Residents are asked to be patient as detours will be in place throughout construction.
The Stage 1.1 works are part of delivering the Cessnock CBD Master Plan and associated Cessnock Commercial Precinct Project. This is all part of the Cessnock CBD Revitalisation that includes the Bridges Hill Park Playground project and access improvement upgrades.
The works kicking off at the end of May include the installation of new raised road pavement to improve pedestrian amenity. Residents will also notice the installation of planter boxes, street trees and bench seating to enhance the streetscape. Drainage works will also form part of the project. On completion of these works the roundabout will be reinstated to enable traffic flow to return to normal.
Council’s Infrastructure Manager, Katrina Kerr said Council is staging the works to limit disruption to the community and business owners in the CBD.
“Disruption to the community is unavoidable when the site is in the heart of the Cessnock CBD. Council is working to ensure measures are in place to limit disruption. We have spoken with individual businesses directly impacted by the works and will continue to do so. The program of works has been designed with businesses in mind including some night works. Temporary pedestrian access will also be in place to ensure foot traffic can navigate the work site and access businesses throughout the construction period.”
The works will take place in three stages to allow one way traffic access through the work zone. Traffic flows will return as normal between August and September. Residents are advised during this time to follow the detours in place.
