Ballarat City Council will give $240,000 to help lift Royal South Street Eisteddfod numbers following the closure of Her Majesty’s Theatre for the 2018 competition.

The Strategic Partnership Grant is for a four-year period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2022.

The annual payment of $60,000 acknowledges the Royal South Street Society’s significant contribution to Ballarat and the region’s performing arts community and associated businesses, as well as supporting City of Ballarat’s Creative City Strategy of enhancing a leading arts and culture core.

The Royal South Street Society had requested funding to help increase audience and participant numbers which declined by 18 per cent in 2018, partly due to the closure of Her Majesty’s Theatre for major construction works.

The Royal South Street Society is a significant and major cultural tourism attraction for Ballarat, with its annual economic impact calculated to be $5,569,524.

The eisteddfod usually attracts over 11,000 performers and 34,000 in audience attendance.

The Royal South Street Society also has an annual turnover of $934,000, with a significant level of local investment and with almost all revenue invested back into the event.
