Council is inviting local businesses and individuals to help celebrate NAIDOC Week this year by being part of our annual Corroboree.
The Corroboree has become a popular way for Mildura to celebrate NAIDOC Week and is an initiative of Mildura Rural City Council and the Aboriginal Action Committee.
To be held on Sunday 7 July at Nowingi Place, the Corroboree is not only a chance to mark NAIDOC Week, it’s an opportunity to celebrate and gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and achievements.
The theme for NAIDOC Week 2019 is Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future. The words Voice, Treaty and Truth are in reference to the three key elements in the reforms set out in the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart, which represent the unified position of First Nations Australians.
A major component of the Mildura Corroboree is the host of cultural workshops, stalls, entertainment and food that showcase our region’s rich traditional culture and history.
Council is inviting local community members, groups and organisations who wish to provide these features and attractions to be part of the event.
Application forms are now available on Council’s website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Community/NAIDOC-Week or in hard copy at Council’s Deakin Avenue and Madden Avenue Service Centres. Forms must be filled out and returned by Friday 24 May.
Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equality Helen Healy encouraged local people and groups to become involved.
“We saw a fantastic response to last year’s Corroboree, which was a great way to learn more about the compelling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures that are at the heart of our region,” Cr Healy said.
“By hosting a stall, providing food or entertainment, or conducting a workshop at this year’s event, you’ll be contributing to our community’s understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, as well as being part of a very rewarding and successful community event.”
Held annually in July, NAIDOC Week is a national celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Mildura’s Corroboree, is among a raft of events that will be held across the region and the entire country, to mark the occasion.
It is also part of Council’s commitment to reconciliation through its Reconciliation Action Plan and recognition of the importance of cultural celebrations highlighting the community, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our region.
