The City of Ballarat today mourns the passing of Australia’s 23rd Prime Minister, Bob Hawke.

Mr Hawke was a titan of the Australian political landscape and will always be remembered as a prime minister for the people.

His economic reforms, the creation of Medicare, and his legacy in foreign policy, women’s rights and environmental protections still strongly influence Australia today.

He will be sadly missed as one of the statesmen of Australian politics, a larrikin that everybody loved – no matter your political persuasion – and as the prime minister who substantially changed our country for the better.
