New playgrounds and green space for Town Beach

The latest stage of the exciting upgrades at Broome’s popular Town Beach is underway with construction to start on new green space, playgrounds, markets area and more.

Construction will be undertaken by local firm Roadline Civil Contractors following a tender process, with funding from Lotterywest and the Shire of Broome.

Access to the first two stages of the project is now open to the public including a section of the rock seawall and grassed terraces overlooking Roebuck Bay, and the extension of Hamersley St behind the Broome Museum through to Robinson St, including car and boat trailer parking. However, further short-term closures may be required as finishing touches are added.   

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said the latest stage of the Town Beach Project would include expanding the existing green space through to Catalinas and incorporating shade structures and BBQ areas overlooking Roebuck Bay; a nature playground featuring a wooden replica jetty, boat and climbing logs; an all-ages playground including trampolines, scooter track and half basketball court; and new markets space in front of the museum.

Community art and historical information will also be featured including wooden animal carvings created by Agunya and Juvenile Justice; ceramic tiles from the Community Tile Project; and artwork and signage developed with Yawuru and the Broome Historical Society.

Access to the existing parkland, markets and water park will continue as normal outside the site boundaries.

“It’s really exciting to see the Town Beach Project taking shape as a space that can be enjoyed by our whole community as well as the many visitors we welcome at this time of the year,” Cr Tracey said. 

“This weekend’s Staircase to the Moon will be the community’s first opportunity to use the new grassed terraces above the rock seawall as well as the new roadway and parking that have been created in the first phases of the project.

“The latest stage now getting underway will make this location an even greater asset for our community by further enhancing its unique mix of history, heritage and recreation.”

The sub-projects in the Town Beach Project are drawn from the Old Broome Development Strategy that was developed after extensive consultation with the community and cooperation from key stakeholders including Kimberley Ports, Yawuru Traditional Owners, the Broome Historical Society Museum, Water Corporation and others.
