Castaways returns bigger and better than ever in 2019, with the awards set to run from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 3 November at the Rockingham Beach Foreshore. Castaways is the City’s major arts and culture event and will feature sculptural works created from recycled and repurposed materials presented at the newly revitalised Rockingham Beach Foreshore. In 2019 Castaways will comprise three simultaneous exhibitions. The main Castaways Sculpture Awards Exhibition and the Schools Exhibition will both be on display at the Rockingham Beach Foreshore.
Meanwhile, a new Maquette and Small Sculpture Exhibition, sponsored by Warnbro Centre, will also be held at the Rockingham Arts Centre, which is just a short stroll to Kent Street from the beach. A maquette is a sculptor’s small preliminary model or sketch. City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged local artists to make a submission for the event. “Since 2008 Castaways has created opportunities for emerging and professional artists, schools and local businesses to be involved in an event that celebrates innovation and environmental awareness,” Mayor Sammels said. “The return of Castaways in 2019 is an exciting moment for local artists and I encourage anybody that is interested in participating to make a submission before the deadline on Monday 3 June 2019.” The nine-day outdoor exhibition will be curated by Lyn Di Ciero and will feature a two-day Foreshore Celebration on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October 2019 which will see the foreshore come alive with free entertainment and activities for people of all ages and abilities.
