Bernera Road Extension revolutionises Edmondson Park

Travel through Edmondson Park takes a quantum leap on Saturday, 25 May with the opening of the $35 million Bernera Road Extension.

A 1.35km stretch of Bernera Road (formerly known as Croatia Avenue) between Camden Valley Way and Edmondson Park train station was reconstructed and widened using more than 30,000 tonnes of recycled road base and asphalt.

The new four-lane road will provide fast, easy access through Edmondson Park to the train station.

Burton Contractors began work on the project in April 2018. Nearly $16 million of the total $35 million cost was funded by the NSW Department of Planning, with Liverpool City Council providing the balance.

“The completion of the Bernera Road Extension marks a key milestone in realising Council’s vision for Edmondson Park, one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Sydney,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“Edmondson Park is thriving and this new road is a major step in ensuring its long-term success.

“Council is committed to improving our road network. The Bernera Road Extension achieves two goals – a better road for motorists and a quicker commute for public transport users.”

Welcoming the road opening, the Department of Planning and Environment’s Acting Deputy Secretary, Planning and Design, Brett Whitworth, said the project has joint funding from the State Government’s Housing Acceleration Fund (HAF) and Low Cost Loans Initiative, as well as Liverpool City Council.

“HAF grants allow early investment in infrastructure projects that typically could only be considered for funding in the longer term, often after housing is already built and too late to make a real community,” Mr Whitworth said.

This HAF project helped Liverpool City Council to deliver the Bernera Road Extension, to ensure essential infrastructure to support the growing Edmondson Park community of 3,500 homes.

“This project will help shape Edmondson Park into a real community, connected and efficient, as well as making the most of the NSW Government’s investment in major infrastructure like the Camden Valley Way and Bringelly Road upgrades,” Mr Whitworth said.

He said the State Government is also helping Liverpool City Council to save money on its Bernera Road Extension project loan.

“Council will be refunded $773,028 in interest, thanks to the NSW Government’s Low Cost Loans Initiative,” Mr Whitworth said.

The opening will be celebrated in a gala day of live entertainment including music from Dogma, Ula and Double Shot, a free sausage sizzle, free coffee and ice cream, face painting, balloons and fun activities for children. Mayor Waller will open the road during an official ceremony at 11.30am.

The Bernera Road Extension opening runs from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, 25 May, on Bernera Road between Poziers Road and Soldiers Parade, Edmondson Park.
