Art on the Path could be the perfect fit

Step into the new season in sustainable style. Art on the Path this Sunday at Broulee offers alternatives to buying clothes without burning a hole in your pocket.

Eurobodalla Council’s environmental education officer Bernadette Davis said cheap fast-fashion was going out of style: “Discarded clothes sent to landfill take years to break down and release methane gas, contributing to global warming”.

“It’s simple choices that collectively make a big difference. Wearing upcycled and pre-loved clothing is an obvious way for people to reduce their global footprint.”

Ms Davis said Art on the Path was all about sustainability, showcasing local arts and craft folk who are inspired by the environment and looking for ways to help us all tread lightly on the planet.

“We’ll have folks selling second hand clothes and talking about slow fashion, with kids making scrunchies from fabric scraps to stop them going to landfill,” she said.

Art on the Path is more than slow fashion. Ms Davis said the event featured a range of upcycled and locally made gems, including furniture created from discarded pallets, crafts and household items, plus locally-made soaps, shampoo and conditioners.

“We even have a guy who is developing the ultimate in environmentally-friendly surfboards. He uses upcycled wood – they’re like works of art.”

“Buying locally-made items reduces carbon miles but, more importantly, buyers can learn the story behind their purchases”.

Art on the Path runs four times each year, with between 20 and 50 stalls at each event. Ms Davis said environmentally-concerned organisations would also be there.

“The Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden will be selling native plants and are happy to give you tips on creating gardens which assist our native animals,” she said.

“Find out what Landcare, environmental groups and our local schools are doing to promote sustainability and learn how you can get involved. Council’s sustainability team will be there, so drop in and say hello. It’s a great opportunity to promote environmental activities across the shire. Don’t forget to bring your own coffee mug. Every little bit counts.”

Art on the Path will be held on the shared pathway along Coronation Drive at Broulee, opposite the general store, from 8am to 12pm on Sunday 26 May.
