Lemon trees a tasty addition to Smithfield town centre

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone and Deputy Mayor Sera Yilmaz with one of the new lemon trees.Fairfield City Council is adding beauty and flavour to Smithfield town centre with the addition of 22 lemon trees.
The new trees will line both sides of The Horsley Drive and are being planted in new planter boxes along with bright, attractive geraniums.
Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said he hoped the new trees proved popular with residents and shoppers.
“Council is committed to improving the appearance of our town centres. Residents have been telling me that they wanted us to plant fruit trees in our public spaces for the community to enjoy,” Mayor Carbone said.
“If this experiment proves successful, we will consider planting a variety of other fruit trees in our town centres across the City.
“Next time you visit Smithfield town centre, take a close look at the trees and if they’re ripe, feel free to pick a lemon to take home.”
The beautification works in Smithfield are among a number of town centre improvement projects being undertaken by Council in 2019.
Council recently planted more trees in the Bonnyrigg town centre and has plans for more than $1 million in improvements for Fairfield City Centre.
