Bayside netballers score new indoor courts
Bayside City Council 23 May 2019

Bayside’s netballers are set to play on new indoor as well as outdoor netball courts from 2021. Council has decided to build two indoor courts and nine outdoor courts as part of Stage One of the $21 million new Bayside Netball Centre.

The change to include the indoor courts follows the Federal government’s $4.7 million commitment earlier this year to partially fund the construction of the indoor courts.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Michael Heffernan said Council had acted to lock in the federal funding for the Centre which is set to be Council’s largest infrastructure project.

“We want to get our netballers playing on new courts as soon as possible and maximise the opportunity presented by the federal funding”, he said.

“Council will deliver two indoor and nine outdoor courts while continuing to seek additional State government funding to build more courts in the future.”

The project is subject to receiving planning approval.

Each week, many of Bayside’s 2,700 netballers miss out on playing Australia’s most popular female sport due to a lack of court space.

Sandringham District Netball Association, Netball Victoria and Council have advocated strongly for funding from Federal and State governments for netball in Bayside.

Future provision will be made for one further indoor and six outdoor courts at the Wangara Road site which is a former quarry and landfill site.
