‘Celebrating Together’ is this year’s theme for the Charters Towers region’s National Reconciliation Week celebrations.

National Reconciliation Week is a national campaign held each year from 27 May to 3 June. It commemorates two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey—the successful 1967 referendum and the 1992 High Court Mabo decision.

The 2019 national theme is ‘Grounded in truth. Walk together with courage.’

This theme is to encourage Australians to join the movement towards a unified future by building positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples based on truth, understanding and respect for each other.

“National Reconciliation Week is about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. It promotes and facilitates respect, trust and positive relationships,” said Mayor Liz Schmidt.

“This year we’ll have an art exhibition of local indigenous art on display and we’ll meet together at the Yarning Circle at the Church and Anne Street end of Lissner Park to enjoy cultural stories, a dance performance from our indigenous youth and have a sausage sizzle. It’s a great time to mingle and celebrate our achievements together.”

The local Indigenous Art Exhibition will open on the 24th of May at the Excelsior Library from 5:30pm to 7pm. Finger food with a ‘bush tucker’ theme will be served on the night. The exhibition will be on display throughout Reconciliation Week until 3 June.

The community gathering with cultural stories, dance performance and barbeque will be held in Lissner Park on Saturday 1 June from 10am to 12:00pm.

The Charters Towers celebrations are funded by the Celebrating Reconciliation Small Grants Program and in-kind support from Charters Towers Regional Council.
