FOGO Bin Roll-Out
Shire of Harvey 23 May 2019

Delivery of Your Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) Bin

You may be aware that the Shire of Harvey will be introducing a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bin to its residents for organic waste.

All households with an existing waste service can expect delivery of their new FOGO bin late July to early August 2019.

Food and garden waste will be put in this bin where it will be turned into compost at the Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility. In the next few weeks keep a look out for a letter advising of the specific start date for each collection area and other important information.

Each household will receive:

A 240L lime green coloured bin; A 5-litre plastic kitchen caddy with a lid, to assist you in collecting organic waste in your kitchen; 4 rolls of compostable bags will be supplied to line your kitchen caddy; Compostable bags only are to be used, plastic bags will contaminate the compost. An information booklet and calendar on how to use your bins.

How will things change?

Your FOGO bin will be collected weekly on your current bin collection day. If changes are required, you will be notified. General waste bins (yours may have a red or dark green lid) will change to a fortnightly collection; Recycling bins (yellow lid) will continue to be collected fortnightly. Organic and garden waste you would usually put in the general waste bin must now be placed in your FOGO bin.

Two bins will be put out on your verge at the same time, your FOGO bin each week and your other two bins on alternate weeks.

Why FOGO?

Council considered multiple issues and opportunities in making the decision to introduce a FOGO bin, these included:

The growing population of our community and the amount of waste generated; The capacity of existing landfill sites, the increasing costs of landfill and the implications of developing new sites; State Waste Authority major regional area targets of 50 per cent diversion of waste from landfill by 2020, and 60 per cent by 2030; Availability of present grant funding to assist with the introduction of an organics bin service; Environmental responsibilities to reduce the impact of organic waste in landfill on the natural environment and benefit long term public health outcomes; Growing community expectations to move towards more sustainable waste management methods; The success of the 3-Bin service in nearby local government areas.
