Visitors to ArtSpace at Realm are seeing art in a whole new light.
MIRROR IMAGE is an immersive light installation created by one of Australia’s pre-eminent multimedia artists, Ross Manning, for ArtSpace.
The space has been transformed into a colourful, kinetic and dancing environment of manipulated optical effects, intriguing audiences with the magical mechanics of light.
Speaking at the launch of MIRROR IMAGE at Realm on Saturday 4 May, Deputy Mayor Cr Kylie Spears said Manning’s playful use of mirrors and simply constructed technologies invites audiences of all ages to be immersed into a world of hypnotic colours and moving waves of light.
“Best known for his use of everyday materials, Manning playfully dissects overlooked technologies to produce hypnotic exchanges between light, sound and movement,” Cr Spears said.
“The result is a spectacular array of mirrored machines that Manning has cleverly configured to intermittently move and magically reflect light within the space,” Cr Spears said.
Manning’s work straddles the divide between art and technology, re-contextualising and re-purposing everyday materials, harnessing their previously unmet potential and challenging our expectations.
“We are honoured to have an artist of such high calibre represented at ArtSpace at Realm and to present a work that has been especially commissioned for the space,” Cr Spears said.
While visiting Realm, visitors can also admire renowned contemporary artist Gosia Wlodarczak’s performative drawing commission on the wall outside ArtSpace.
“Drawing is at the heart of Wlodarczak’s practice. She doesn’t work in a studio, instead her drawings happen in real time in the exhibition space documenting the present moment as she witnesses it,” Cr Spears said.
“I encourage visitors to take in the the artist’s layered drawing, which was completed over three days and was inspired by her sensory experience of the Realm building, the people and surrounds,” she said.
