About 1500 people turned out to celebrate the opening of Bernera Road in Edmondson Park on Saturday.
Local residents strolled all over their new road, enjoying the autumn sunshine and a tempting array of free entertainment and food.
The free sausage sizzle, coffee and ice cream proved hugely popular, with a steady stream of delights handed out to happy families throughout the four-hour opening.
Musical acts Ula, Dogma, Phil Faalua and Andro Martinez, and Double Shot kept the stage buzzing, while children enjoyed face painting, garden games and the jumping castle.
“The opening of Bernera Road is a great day for Edmondson Park and it was lovely to see the local community turn up in such numbers to celebrate with us,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.
“Edmondson Park is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Australia and Liverpool City Council is committed to ensuring its residents get the services they deserve.
“Bernera Road provides quick, easy access through Edmondson Park to the train station, a crucial piece of infrastructure that will instantly deliver rewards for residents.”
A 1.35km stretch of Bernera Road (formerly known as Croatia Avenue) between Camden Valley Way and Edmondson Park train station was reconstructed and widened using more than 30,000 tonnes of recycled road base and asphalt.
Nearly $16 million of the total $35 million cost was funded by the NSW Department of Planning, with Liverpool City Council providing the balance.
