Central Highlanders march against domestic violence

CentacareCQ and the Central Highlands Regional Council are inviting residents to take a stance against domestic and family violence tomorrow.

A community march will be held in Emerald to mark Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, an annual campaign held each May to raise community awareness of the social and personal impacts of domestic and family violence.

The march will assemble at 9.00 am at the Emerald Town Hall and end at the CentacareCQ office on Egerton Street.

‘It’s up to each and every one of us to come together and take action to show domestic and family violence is not acceptable – not now, not ever,’ Mayor Kerry Hayes said.

‘We can all play a role in changing the culture and attitudes that underpin violence in our community, and it’s encouraging to see our community march grow in numbers each year.’

Mayor Hayes also welcomed the state government’s release of a new dedicated framework to address the prevalence of domestic and family violence within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities this week.

‘This a great step towards making a genuine difference in this space and hopefully achieving better outcomes in the future,’ Mayor Hayes said.
