Cambridge Volunteers Honoured & Awarded

The unheralded life-blood of the Cambridge Community were honoured at the Annual Volunteer Awards and Recognition function on Friday 24 May during the National Volunteer Week celebrations.

Anita McSweeney of City Beach has been recognised for her work with 'Buy Nothing City Beach', 'Community and U City Beach' and City Beach Neighbourhood Watch, and presented with the Community Service Volunteer Award.Anita started the not-for-profit, grass roots, volunteer driven project 'Buy Nothing City Beach' in 2016 and has solely built the group from its inception to 1,236 members in two years. Anita is also the Administrator of the Community Noticeboard, Community and U City Beach - a community platform for local residents to post local events and general community happenings. The group has grown its membership from 80 to 844 in 12 months.

The Sport and Recreation Volunteer Award had joint winners this year with Jonathon Storey recognised for his work with the Perry Lakes Parkrun and Brittany Whitehead for the Perth Netball Association and City Beach Netball Club. Jonathan established the first, timed Parkrun at Claisebrook Cove in 2012. In 2018 he developed a five kilometre course for Perry Lakes Reserve and has been running this weekly event since September 2018. Each Parkrun requires considerable logistical input which Jonathan organises each week. Brittany has demonstrated her commitment during the past seven years to volunteering on multiple levels, including as a coach, umpire and treasurer for City Beach Surfers; a selector, coach and umpire for Associations Representative Competitions; and as an Executive Member of Perth Netball Association.

Congratulations also go to the other nominees, Kath Dawson and Erica Dobson Pratt, who performed outstanding service to the community.
