Nuriootpa (Sturt Highway Service Centre) DPA

Council will proceed with the Nuriootpa (Sturt Highway Service Centre) Development Plan Amendment (DPA), paying the way for highway development adjacent Belvidere Road at Nuriootpa.

The DPA was spearheaded by a developer seeking to establish a petrol station, restaurant, convenience store, parking, playground and public amenities on the corner of Sturt Highway and Belvidere Road.

Council resolved to proceed last month following community consultation which attracted 23 written submissions and 10 agency comments.

Major themes included whether this type of facility is needed; increased road safety risks at an existing poor intersection; and concerns about noise, location and impact on amenity.  

In response to the submissions Council resolved to adopt the DPA with changes that will address noise, air quality and odour, as well as safe and convenient access for all vehicles, including the largest vehicles expected to access the site.

Mayor Bim Lange said the potential risks and benefits were carefully considered, and checks and balances remain in place for prospective developers.

“Effectively this new policy makes developments such as a petrol station a merit form of development, however any such application still needs to go through a rigorous development approval process,” Mayor Lange said.

Council’s decision is subject to Ministerial approval.
