A multi-sport and recreational hub project in Redlynch has been awarded a coveted state award.

The Redlynch Sport and Recreation Parkland Master Plan Project has received the Parks and Leisure Australia (QLD) award in the Strategic Planning category.

The award recognises the strategic development of parks, open space, sport, recreation and leisure opportunities that enrich their community.

The Masterplan will deliver a range sporting and recreational facilities, including fields, cycling and pedestrian paths, and indoor facilities.

Division 6 Councillor Linda Cooper said the accolade recognised Council’s planning and inclusive approach in developing infrastructure.

“We are absolutely delighted that PLA has recognised the city’s efforts through this very prestigious award,” Cr Cooper said.

“The ongoing success of this project is testament to the efforts made in engaging residents and stakeholders when formulating the Masterplan.

“This engagement identified what people saw as vital for our community and its continued growth.

Cr Cooper pointed to the opening of AFL Cape York House for Girls this year, along with the extension the active trail path as part of the Masterplan’s success.

The Masterplan, developed by Council in collaboration with consultants Rounsefell Design, also makes provision for future indoor sport courts and meeting rooms, as well as the creation of rectangular sporting fields and an oval for AFL and cricket.

“Having identified an under-supply of public open spaces within Redlynch, several years ago Council made the strategic decision to acquire this 51-hectare parcel of land in order to develop it specifically for recreational and sporting use,” Cr Cooper said.

“That foresight has now resulted in an award-winning area that gives families access to beautiful nature trails, meandering cycling paths and new sporting facilities.

“And of course, this precinct is not only for Redlynch residents, but something that the whole Cairns community can enjoy.

“That’s why projects like this are so important and why Council has worked so hard to deliver something that add value to our city.”

For over 20 years, Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) has recognised excellence in the parks and leisure industry through its awards program.

The PLA Awards of Excellence promote and encourage best industry practice and recognise achievements and outstanding work of individuals and teams employed in the parks and leisure industry.

As a State award recipient, Council is now vying for the National award, which will be announced at the Crown Perth, Western Australia, 29 October 2019.
