Castaways Deadline Extended
City of Rockingham 5 Jun 2019

The Castaways Sculpture Awards will run from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 3 November 2019 at the Rockingham Beach Foreshore and will feature sculptural works created from recycled and repurposed materials.

Castaways will comprise three simultaneous exhibitions. The main Castaways Sculpture Awards Exhibition and the Schools Exhibition will be on display at the Rockingham Beach Foreshore while a new Maquette and Small Sculpture Exhibition will be held at the Rockingham Arts Centre.

There are $25,000 worth of non-acquisitive prizes to be won including the $10,000 Alcoa Major Award for overall excellence in a recycled sculpture with an aluminium component.

In addition, Castaways will also serve as the community launch of the newly revitalised foreshore, following works throughout 2018 and 2019

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged artists to take advantage of the extended deadline and make a submission.

“Castaways has created fantastic opportunities for emerging and professional artists, local businesses and schools since 2008,” Mayor Sammels said.

“It’s an event that allows participants to be actively involved in celebrating innovation and environmental awareness. With an exciting prize pool on offer and the potential for selected entries to receive exposure to thousands of visitors, I encourage all interested artists to make a submission before the deadline on 17 June 2019.”

Castaways returns in 2019 after construction on stage one of the $15.7 million Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation is completed.

The nine day outdoor exhibition will serve as the community launch of the exciting new foreshore project and will also include a two-day Foreshore Celebration on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October featuring free entertainment and activities for people of all ages and abilities.
