Do you have questions about the upcoming e-waste ban from landfill which comes into effect on July 1, 2019? To prepare the community, East Gippsland Shire Council will be delivering community information sessions from June 11 to 14 in Bairnsdale, Bruthen, Cann River, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Metung, Omeo, Orbost and Paynesville to answer any questions residents may have about the upcoming ban.
E-waste is any item with a plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted. It covers a whole range of items such as computers, mobile phones, microwaves, printers, televisions, heaters, small appliances and gaming consoles. From July 1, these items can no longer be placed in any kerbside bins and instead must go to a designated e-waste drop-off point to recycle and keep them out of landfill.
Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell said waste management costs council around $150 per cubic metre for any material that goes to landfill and an additional $85 per tonne to process and transport to Melbourne; money that could be spent on other, more meaningful community projects.
“Until the end of June, residents can dispose of their e-waste for free at one of the East Gippsland Shire’s designated e-waste drop-off points in Bairnsdale, Orbost, Bruthen, Omeo, Mallacoota and Lakes Entrance,” Cr O’Connell said.
“Popular e-waste items like computers and TVs will remain free to dispose at Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance transfer stations after July 1. Whitegoods and small household batteries will continue to be free at all transfer stations, not just designated e-waste sites.”
Fluoro globes and tubes will also be free to dispose at the designated sites. Council is a participant of Mobile Muster – so mobiles phones will still be free to recycle.
