Liverpool City Council has declared war on shopping trolleys, rounding up 450 in one day.
“This is a war and we have collected a big bounty today,” said Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller. “We’ve scoured the Georges River, we’ve been in parks, we’ve been on footpaths, in suburban streets and in our CBD rounding up dumped trolleys.
“We started a campaign this year – Pushed Too Far – in which members of the community were invited to report dumped trolleys.
“We got a great response from the community but the retailers are not getting the message and we have had to take the matter into our own hands.
“I say to retailers, particularly the major chain supermarkets, that this is your problem, enough is enough. You are community partners and it is in your interests that we have trolleys off our streets and out of our waterways.
“If retailers think smartly about upgrading their trolleys to include coin operation or a wheel lock mechanism, in the long term they, Council and the community will benefit from the significant reduction in trolleys strewn throughout the city,” Mayor Waller said.
Members of the community can report dumped trolleys at www.liverpool.nsw.gov.au/report-a-trolley.
The trolley roundup coincided with Clean Up Liverpool Day, a Council initiative in which about 400 staff members collected rubbish at 13 sites across the Liverpool local government area (LGA).
