Memory Café Forming Lasting Connections

The Drop in the Ocean Memory Café is an initiative formed by the City in partnership with Alzheimer’s WA and Rockingham and Districts Alzheimer’s Inc.

Since April 2018 the memory café has provided people living with dementia and their carers with the opportunity to gather in a friendly social setting, enjoy a warm cuppa and chat to share experiences and memories.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the City was committed to making Rockingham a more dementia and age-friendly place through activities such as the Drop in the Ocean Memory Café.

“The Drop in the Ocean Memory Café has proven to be a hit with residents affected by dementia, and their carers, as it provides people living in similar circumstances with a chance to create new networks based on a shared understanding,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Living with dementia and caring for those impacted by it can be a challenging task for families, which is why the City is delighted to be able to offer residents the opportunity to connect in a friendly environment.

“A number of participants in the memory café have highlighted just how positive their experiences have been, so I encourage any residents who are living with dementia or are caring for someone affected to take part in one of the café’s monthly meetings.”    

The Drop in the Ocean Memory Café meets on the third Monday of each month from 10am – 12pm at The Clipper Inn, located on Patterson Road in Rockingham.

People living with dementia, and their carers, are invited to come to a small celebration at the Clipper Inn Café on Monday 17 June 2019 from 10am – 12pm to help celebrate the café’s one year anniversary.
