In a first for the region, a new music event for young people with a disability has today been announced to be held in Campbelltown in August.

The Feel the Beat music festival is the latest addition to the community events run by Council and will put the needs of people with a disability first.

So far, the festival line-up includes Ironic Circus, Underwraps and Rudely Interrupted at The Cube in Campbelltown Catholic Club for two separate age group sessions.

While energy levels on stage will be high, the event will be managed to ensure participants are comfortable by controlling output noise levels, appropriate lighting and established quiet zones.

Underwraps will also perform at Feel the Beat.

“Our ambition has been to create an event that young people with a disability can enjoy by adapting the setting to make it suitable to meet special requirements,” said Mayor George Brticevic.

“We want to remove anything that might inhibit someone with a disability from enjoying live entertainment at a large event,” Cr Brticevic said.

“This event also presents us with an opportunity to learn more and increase awareness of accessibility issues so that we can progress as an inclusive community,” he said.

The idea for the festival was suggested by Councillor Margaret Chivers as a Notice of Motion at Council in March this year.

Feel the Beat will be held as two sessions on Saturday 18 August:-

Over the Rainbow - 12 to 17 years from 2pm to 4.30pm Light Up Your Life - 18 to 24 year olds from 6pm to 10pm.

There will be Auslan interpreters, a dance area, seating area including a chill out zone full of cushions, bean bags and blankets, quiet zones and tables and chairs.

To add to the festival vibe, the event festival will feature fun, festival-like activities such as airbrush tattoos, henna tattoos, flower crown making and more.

Tickets will be $10 and will go on sale soon.
